Religious Education at St Mary's

At St Mary’s, Religious Education helps children understand faith, belief and the world around them.

We follow the London Diocesan Board for Schools agreed RE scheme, which includes Christianity and the world’s major religions. The curriculum is also developing to include units exploring non-religious and spiritual worldviews, including people who do not identify with a particular faith but who may describe themselves as spiritual.

This reflects our school vision because we believe that everyone is precious and loved by God. RE helps children to listen to others, ask thoughtful questions, understand different perspectives and reflect on their own beliefs and values.

Through RE, we want children to become knowledgeable, curious and compassionate, able to engage respectfully with people whose beliefs and experiences may be different from their own.

As a Church of England school, Christianity has a central place within our curriculum, while pupils also learn about a wide range of religions and worldviews.

Religious Education is a curriculum subject and is distinct from Collective Worship.

Parents and carers have a legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. Parents considering withdrawal are encouraged to speak with the Headteacher first so that the purpose and content of the curriculum can be discussed.
